The story

Six private villas on a hill that was once an island. Romans named it, Spain fortified it, Caravaggio painted his last light here. Today it belongs, for a week or two, to your family.

Primabefore history

An island, tied to Tuscany by the sea.

Currents and river sand built two long bars to the mountain. Between them lies the lagoon.

Six kilometres of pine-backed beach on the Feniglia bar, ten minutes from your terrace.

Named for the bankers of Rome.

Rome founds Cosa across the lagoon. The mountain's name most likely comes from the argentarii, Rome's moneylenders.

Cosa's walls still stand twenty minutes away, with the best view back to the mountain.

A harbour ringed with forts.

Spain keeps this coast as the Stato dei Presidi. Porto Ercole has its finest century.

The forts still keep watch over the harbour where you dine.

1610Caravaggio

The painter's last shore.

On his way to a pardon in Rome, Caravaggio lands at Porto Ercole. He dies here of a fever, aged 39.

At the end of the day, the light on your terrace falls the way it falls in his paintings.

The lagoon returns to the birds.

Italy and WWF protect the lagoon. Each winter, the flamingos come back.

Children count them from the car on the drive to the villa.
